Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has immediately terminated a temporary public policy that allowed visitors to apply for work permits from within Canada.
This policy was initially introduced by IRCC in August 2020 to assist visitors who were unable to leave Canada due to travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under this policy, visitors were allowed to apply for work permits without having to leave the country. Furthermore, foreign nationals who had held a work permit in the last 12 months but who changed their status in Canada to “visitor” could apply to work legally in Canada while waiting for a decision on their new work permit application.
Although the policy was originally scheduled to end on February 28, 2025, IRCC has decided to conclude it earlier as part of an effort to adjust the number of temporary residents in Canada and uphold the integrity of the immigration system.
Applications submitted under this policy before August 28, 2024, will still be processed by IRCC.
